DJ Wedding Disco were delighted to be involved in celebrating the marriage of Jay and Julie by providing a Wedding DJ at Sketchley Grange.
Having married abroad accompanied by a few close relatives, they now wanted to lay on a party back home for around 100 of their friends, colleagues and wider family who couldn’t make the trip to Thailand.
It was to be an evening-only affair which meant that we had access to the function room for pretty much the whole day to prepare.
Julie had approached us having seen us in action at a friend’s wedding several months previously; the friend had passed on our details and Julie had already visited our website and made up her mind about a few optional extras that she wanted to hire.
In particular Julie was interested in large-screen projection of her wedding snaps as well as subtle mood lighting throughout the function suite and bar area. Being a November party, this would work especially well due to the guests’ arrivals after dark.
The first dance
Chosen because it reminded them so much of their travels and especially their Thai wedding, Jay & Julie had settled on Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s rendition of Over the Rainbow – a lovely light version of the song.
Not many guests had heard this version but as soon as the first chorus came about they were all joining in and singing along as the new Bride & Groom swept each other along the dancefloor to rapturous applause from the appreciative crowd.
Then it was straight into a bunch of 80s and 90s classic pop tracks to give everyone else the chance to boogie before the buffet break.

Our relationship with Jay & Julie kicked off with a meeting over at Sketchley Grange where they walked me through their already advanced plans for the evening.
Once we’d heard what they wanted to achieve with the digital photo projection and the moodlighting, it was simply a case of taking some room measurements and agreeing a few matters with the venue’s Events Manager.
During the afternoon prior to the party, we installed 22 computer controlled venue LED uplighting units – all set to a deep shade of pink to welcome the guests.
Later they would be set to various patterns to tie in with the music styles being played during the disco to bring the whole room to life.
We also added a 3m video projection screen and two plasma panels in the bar and lounge areas for the rolling display of the wedding photographs.
The disco element of the party was pretty standard fare for a historic venue, and so the overall cost of the project was on a par with the 3-tier cake.
The End of the Night
At the Planning Meeting we’d agreed that Jay & Julie would leave around 20 minutes before the end of the party. This would allow us to co-ordinate a big send-off song and assemble the guests into an archway leading to the exit door where a limo would be waiting to take them to a local hotel.
The song was ideal – The Beatles’ Hey Jude – which, at 7 minutes long, gave us plenty of time for a sing-song then the bridal party leaving the venue whilst the guests were still reciting the chorus.
A couple more slow numbers from us for the remaining guests and a nice gentle finish to a very welcome round of applause, whistles and calls for “one more”!
